There is a wide variety of hanging systems for different wall types, frame weights, and of course, according to your preferences. Perhaps you don’t want to drill holes in your wall, maybe you’re renting or want to hang a picture where it’s simply not possible to drill. Don’t worry, we have a solution for every situation!
Hanging frames and mirrors at home or in the office is a quick way to make the space more enjoyable and inspiring. But to enjoy your new artwork, it needs to stay securely on the wall with the right type of hanging system. So, what should you choose? There are many different options, but it doesn’t have to be as hard as it may seem to choose the right option for your wall. We also have more detailed guides where we explain more about hangers for different wall types if you need more information!
Make sure you have everything you need at home before you start so it will be easier and quicker. Measure where you want the frame to go and make a small mark with a pencil on the wall so you can easily see where to place your hanging system. Feel free to use a spirit level when hanging your frames, so they will be straight and neat!
Concrete walls are something most people find tricky, as it often requires more work to put something up on a concrete wall than on other materials. But it doesn’t have to be as difficult as it seems. By using the right type of hanging system for your concrete wall and frame, you ensure that your artwork stays in place, and you won’t have to worry about it falling down and breaking. Your artwork will hang properly and securely for a long time!
If you have lighter or smaller frames, often a concrete hook, or picture hook, is enough. A picture hook is a small plastic hook with several pins, which are hammered into the concrete wall. Picture hooks come in different sizes with varying hook dimensions for hanging your frame. When using a picture hook on a concrete wall, no drilling is required, and the holes from the pins will be very small. All you need is a hammer.
If your frame is heavier or larger, a picture hook may not be enough to support the weight. In that case, you will need to use screws and plugs to ensure the frame hangs securely on the concrete wall. Using screws and plugs requires drilling into the wall, which makes the holes slightly bigger, but you won’t have to worry about your frame falling down.
Plasterboard walls are becoming increasingly popular, perhaps because they are fireproof, practical, and sound-insulating. Hanging frames on plasterboard can feel tricky, as the boards are often no thicker than 13 mm. It can feel like there isn’t enough to fasten into. But it doesn’t have to be that difficult – with the right type of hanging system for your plasterboard wall, each fastening point can handle a significant weight.
If you have smaller and lighter frames, we recommend using an X-hook. This type of hook can support up to 5 kg, which is plenty for many frames. X-hooks come in various sizes, with accompanying pins that are hammered into the wall at a slight downward angle. This ensures that your hanging system can support a higher load. You can also use two X-hooks to distribute the weight if you are concerned. The holes in your plasterboard wall will be very small, and no drilling is required.
For heavier frames, screws and plugs are recommended. Such a hanging system can typically handle around 10 kg of weight, so you won’t have to worry about your frames falling. There are different types of screws and plugs for plasterboard, and they all work equally well. The only exception is if you’re hanging something very heavy – in that case, we recommend a hanging system with a metal anchor. For screw and plug systems, you will need to drill into the wall, and the holes will be bigger, but you can be confident that your frame will stay where it should on your plasterboard wall.
Despite the various options for avoiding drilling holes in the walls, there may be situations where you don’t want or can’t make any holes in the wall. Perhaps you’re renting, living in a student apartment, or want to hang something in a place where drilling is difficult or simply don’t want holes in your walls. Even for you, there are smart alternatives that allow you to have beautiful frames on the wall without making any holes!
We sell two different systems for hanging frames without holes. One of the hanging systems comes from 3M Command and uses strong Velcro strips, and the other is a self-adhesive nail from Tesa. The Tesa hanging system can support up to 2 kg per nail, while the Command system comes in several sizes and can be combined to support up to 5.4 kg.
The adjustable and self-adhesive nail from Tesa is a hanging system that sticks to the wall using double-sided adhesive strips. It then has an adjustable nail that helps you position the frame at just the right height. This hanging system is specifically designed for more delicate surfaces such as wallpaper and plasterboard.
The hanging system from 3M Command uses self-adhesive Velcro, which sticks to both the wall and your frame. This hanging system is great for walls where you don’t want to drill but does not work on damaged or wallpapered walls. In that case, Tesa’s self-adhesive nail is a better fit.
Choose the hanging system that suits your wall best, and don’t forget to follow the instructions. That way, you will ensure that your artwork not only looks great on the wall but also stays securely in place without falling down.
Choosing the right hanging system can still feel difficult even after reading through everything.
